Functional beverages — kombucha, kefir water, switchel, adaptogen tonics, mushroom drinks, prebiotic sodas — are one of the fastest-growing categories in Quebec specialty grocery. Kombucha and functional beverage product photography Montreal work covers bottle heroes, fizz-and-bubble macros, lifestyle pours, ingredient storytelling and the bilingual catalogue imagery that wellness-positioned brands need to compete on shelf at IGA, Avril, Rachelle Béry and Whole Foods.
Bottle Hero and the Liquid-In-Glass Problem
Kombucha and functional beverages live in clear or amber glass bottles, and the liquid inside is the visual hero. We use a back-lit white wall with two rim lights from the sides to define the bottle edges and a soft front-fill to bring out the label.
Colour rendering is critical. Pink raspberry kombucha needs to read pink, not magenta; turmeric-ginger needs to read warm yellow, not orange; activated charcoal lemonade needs to read deep grey-black with separation, not flat black. Each colour gets its own white-balance treatment.
Bubble retention in the frame is a styling consideration. Real kombucha effervescence dissipates within 30-60 seconds of pouring; we shoot quickly and we have a bubble-revival technique using a small drop of bottling sugar or food-safe glycerin for hero frames where bubble persistence is needed.
Bottle hero variants include: pure white background for retail catalogue, soft pastel for wellness lifestyle, dark moody for adaptogen and mushroom-positioned products, and ingredient-prop background for kitchen lifestyle.
Bilingual French-and-English label legibility is the default for Quebec functional beverage brands.
Fizz, Bubble and Pour Macros
The pour shot is the most recognizable macro in functional beverage photography. We capture the pour at high shutter speed with a strobe-sync flash to freeze the liquid stream and the bubble cascade.
Bubble macros for kombucha need a specific lighting approach. Carbonation reads as a series of small spheres, each acting as a tiny lens, and the lighting has to give those spheres definition without blowing out the highlights.
Glass-rim and condensation macros add appetite. A cold bottle just out of the fridge with a faint condensation halo around the cap is one of the most effective lifestyle frames for functional beverage social content.
Pour-into-glass and pour-over-ice frames complete the social content set. We shoot these as 9:16 vertical Reels-ready and as 1:1 PDP-ready in the same setup.
Frozen-pour and shaved-ice frames are popular for adaptogen lemonades, herbal tonics and summer flavours.
Wellness Lifestyle, Ingredient Storytelling and Process
Wellness lifestyle frames place the bottle in a kitchen, a yoga studio, a hiking moment, a workplace desk or a brunch table. The right model and the right context multiply conversion on a $4-$8 per-bottle product.
Ingredient storytelling — fresh ginger, turmeric root, hibiscus, butterfly pea, reishi mushroom, ashwagandha root, blueberries — is the brand’s authenticity asset. Each ingredient gets a 100mm macro at f/8-f/11 for a clean, focus-stacked frame.
Process frames — the SCOBY mother, fermentation jars, brewing tanks, hand-bottling — communicate craft and small-batch authenticity. These are the frames that justify a price premium over national-brand soda.
Brand-storytelling editorial pulls — the founder, the team, the location — round out the wellness brand’s full image library. We coordinate these as a single-day on-location shoot at the brewery or production facility.
Bilingual lifestyle metadata — French alt-text for Quebec, English for the rest of Canada — is the default.
Retail, Distribution and Workflow
Functional beverage brands typically distribute through DTC e-commerce, specialty grocery, gym and yoga studio wholesale, and food-service. Each channel needs a slightly different image set.
Specialty grocery in Quebec — Avril, Rachelle Béry, IGA — uses a clean white-background hero plus a lifestyle plus a case-pack frame for the wholesale buyer.
Subscription clubs and DTC variety packs need a ‘flight’ frame showing 3-6 flavours in the same setup with consistent lighting across all bottles.
Turnaround is 5-7 business days for catalogue and 10-14 days for full campaign with motion. Seasonal flavour launches typically book a rush turnaround.
Pricing is per-SKU for hero work plus a half-day studio rate for lifestyle and pour. Bilingual French and English deliverables are the default.
